SIX HIT ENDS FIJI TOUR

Beaten By One Wicket ( N.Z. Press Association) WHANGARET, February 10. A six lofted over the midwicket boundary by a Northland tail batsman, B. Presland, brought the Fijian cricket tour of New Zealand to an appropriate end at Cobham Oval, Whangarei, on Saturday. Although it meant that the tourists had been beaten by one wicket in a thrilling finish it was also a typical stroke to end the game, and the tour. Northland had won a first innings lead of 78 runs by scoring 275 in reply to Fiji’s 197. and the Fijians wasted no time in wiping off the deficit. The openers, E. Logan imoce and H. Apted, took part in the best opening stand of the tour of 145, and Fiji totalled 253 in 175 minutes. Northland required 176 runs in 155 minutes to win and lest five wickets for only 60. But R. Dunning, who made 70, and E. Child put on 78 and pushed the score ahead of the clock.

There was plenty of excitement to come. Three more wickets fell for the addition of one run, but Presland and L. Dunn, the tail-enders, remained unperturbed. Presland hit a four and then a six when eight runs were wanted to win. Scores:— NORTHLAND First Innings .. .. 275 Second Innings R McPherson, lbw, b Dews 3 1. Payne, run out .. .. 16 N.
