YACHTING Freshwater Titles At Lake Waitaki

Thirty boats took part in the annual South Canterbury freshwater sailing champiohships at Lake Waitaki during the week-end. The South Island R Class champion, G. S. Mander, of Christchurch, had little difficulty in taking the major scratch title, winning all three races of the series His crew was A. M. Holland. A mixed fleet of boats was dominated by the R Class which launched 10 craft. Three boats of interest were two one-man Zephyrs of the type that the Charteris Bay club is considering introducing to Christchurch waters in numbers. They came from Oamaru The other boat was the two-man Olympic class Flying Dutchman, sailed by M Berghuis, of Otematata. This varnish-hulled boat is not yet registered; it was no match for J. F. Morrison's Van Tromp. of the same class.

The only R Class dinghy to compare with Manders Frenzy was Fantastic, sailed by G. J and C. J. Cooke, of Kairaki These two your.g men" have improved on some already good performances but Mander too. seem, to get better each time he goes out and the nearest they could get to him was imin 28sec They did. however, win the H. M Blanchard Handicap Trophy for the second successive year.

In the first two races they easily overcame their handicap, with fine performances The oenalty was increased for the final race, but they still managed to take the points for a third placing, which enabled them to top-score The weekend before, at Port Chalmers, they had won the Otago Quadrant championship for the third successive year Fantastic finished the Waitaki handicap series 18 points ahead of Mander s Frenzy which, in spite of being "topweight" scored two seconds and a first.
