REGATTA AT AKAROA

Finn Trophy To D. Bryson D. Bryson, of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club, won the Olympic Finn class championship at the Akaroa regatta during the week-end and became the first holder of a trophy presented by Mr A Milligan of Akaroa. for the title Bryson was twice first, once third and once fifth in the fourrace series. He had an easy win in the (Inal race after trailing on points behind P. G. Mander (Christchurch club). Mander won both races on Saturday and was third yesterday morning: he did not start yesterday afternoon. The Finn championship was sailed in conjunction with the handicap fleet at the regatta, which drew 31 starters. Two days of light winds gave skippers little chance to show their all-round skills, but some good sailing was seen. Mander beat the whole fleet, as well as the Finns, decisively on Saturday afternoon: once he was so far in front he could relax and accept a glass of beer from a passing launch. Yesterday morning, however. he seemed somewhat listless and came in more than two minutes behind Bryson, who was followed, 14 seconds away, by G. D Hobson a Finn skipper from Waimakariri. Hobson wji placed third, behind Bryson and Mander. in the championship. On Saturday morning B E Treleaven's Fresco led a 25-boat fleet for most of the course and finished first. The Waimakariri R class dinghy Beta (K. Tourell) was lying in second place when : a shroud came adrift and the [boat was towed home by N. F. (Pipe’s launch Static. Another Waimakariri boat—D I Harrison's Retort finished .behind Fresco; but both craft lost their placings on handicap. ; Mander was third over the line and. with a minute’s grace on ■the scratch R class dinghies, won the event. Fresco. Retort and Fintahi (Mander) finished within 26 seconds.

Yesterday morning. Harrison and Treleaven exchanged boats Treleaven, in the newly-built clinker ply dinghy which is a distinctively different boat from his own Frenzy-hulled craft, was given the gun at the finish and took the event on handicap as well. Harrison was twelfth on corrected time
