New Steeplechase Best Times ( N.Z Press Association I AUCKLAND. February 11. N K. McDell came a step closer to fulfilling the title given to him of “P. G Snell's successor" when he equalled the New Zealand junior mile record of 4m:n 12.3 sec in the first session of the Auckland athletics championships at Olympic Stadium on Saturday The prediction was made exactly a year ago bv the coach of both runners. Mr A L. Lydiard. after McDell had broken the New Zealand half-mile record In addition to McDell’s run. which also beat the Auckland record by 3,ssec, three other principal records were beaten —the senior and junior steeplechase and the women’s 880 yards. H. Rodger recorded a fine 9min 286 sec in the senior steeplechase and the first three runners bettered the Auckland record of 9m in 29 2sec
E Rompleberg. won the junior race in 9min P2.2sec and Mrs M Sampson reduced her 880 yards record by 5 ssec with a time of 2min 19 4sec.
