NEW BUTTER MARKETS
Prospects For N.Z. ( NJS. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 11. Colonel C. P. Dawnay, chairman of directors of Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., arrived in Auckland on Saturday with a firm belief that' it is not beyond the wit of man to find adequate markets for butter if Britain joins toe European Economic Community. “It can’t be done overnight,” he said, “but the markets can be found —given time. There must be time in Britain's negotiations with the Common Market countries to give New Zealand a chance to find new outlets for her butter.”
Colonel Dawnay is in New Zealand for 10 days. The main purpose of his visit is to investigate the possibilities of new markets. He will then spend six weeks in Australia. “We still have to find out how Britain's entry into toe Common Market is going to affect us all,’’ he said. “We don’t really know yet. On toe whole I’m in favour of Britain joining provided suitable safeguards can be provided for New Zealand and Australia which have supplied the United Kingdom so valuably in the past.” Colonel Dawnay is not worried about the long-term effect of the Common Market. “It will make Britain and Europe much more prosperous, lift toe standard of living in those countries and create a greater demand for foodstuffs from abroad,” he said.
"Hie intermediate period is toe worry and it is up to the politicians to find a way of overcoming that problem The future of wool and meat does not look at all bad at the moment but it's butter we’re worried about.”
The Four Ships.-—Four vessels of the Northern Steamship Company’s greenhulled fleet were berthed at Lyttelton yesterday. They were toe Tainui, Maranui, Poranui, and Maunganui. Although they are regular traders to Lyttelton they are not normally in port at the same time.
