FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression is expected to have moved south-eastwards across the South Island to the area east of Otago by this morning. Forecast:—

Canterbury.—Winds gradually tending to the southerly quarter and becoming moderate to fresh; rain at first, becoming variable skies with scattered showers and cooler.

Marlborough and Nelson.—Fresh to strong northwest to west winds in exposed areas; rain at first, gradually easing to occasional showers with sopie fair periods later; tending cooler.

West Coast.—Moderate, variable winds tending southerly: rain at first, becoming variable skies with occasional showers during the day. Outlook: some showers, chiefly in western areas, otherwise partly cloudy weather predominating. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
