A 76-year-old man was killed when the car he was driving hit a train two miles south of Hinds yesterday afternoon. He was:

The accident occurred about 2.15 p.m. at Christy’s Crossing, a small shingle road which crosses the main south railway line just off the Main South road near Hinds Police said yesterday that Mr Gray’s car, a light seven horsepower, pre-war model, struck the first waggon of the north-bound express goods train. The car then became wedged between the tailings beside the railway line and the goods train. It was smashed beyond repair. Ashburton police said Mr Gray was killed instantly. He was travelling alone in his car.
