For if he did not. he would rob His Next-in-Line who needs the Job, Who has been climbing all these Years (As Men must do in such Careers) Rung by Rung wiser if not sadder. Up Seniority’s great Ladder Room at the Top must be prepared; The Plums are Few and must be shared Brief Glory there awaits him too. Who claims Promotion as his Due: Though he excel in every Function He’ll be retired without Compunction: None sc experienced as he So bold so vigorous, mavbe. He’ll get his farewell Presentation, Fine Words jf Praise and Admrration That Presentation' one of those Deep easv Chairs tn which tc doze? A Fishing Rod’ with Which "to play The unimportant Years away? That Praise' for All he was and did? Only too happy to be rid Of the old So-and-So they are; He kept them back too long by far; His Dav of Power and Glory’s done And the whole Staff can move up One. Well Sir that’s how it is. that’s how Some Men’s best Years get wasted now; And. Sir. that’s why it is that’s why They fade like Phantoms followed by Much platitudinous Well-wishing, To spend their Second Boyhoods fishing!
