Memories Revived

’T’HE news of P. G. Snell’s 1 world record for the mile has revived nostalgic memories of New Zealand for Mr C. E, Holway of Miami, Florida, who, as a professional runner, toured the Dominion in 1911. “The Press” received two letters from Mr Holway. One was addressed to Snell, with a request that it be forwarded to him. In the other Mr Holway said he retained some very pleasant memories of New Zealand, especially Christchurch, which he had made his headquarters in 1911.

Some cuttings which were enclosed in the letter gave a small history of Mr Holway’s athletic career. A story from a San Francisco newspaper of 1913 said: ‘‘Holway, holder of professional world records, the vanquisher of such world

renowned professional runners as Arthur Postle. Jack Donaldson, Major Taylor. Cartmell, and Trembath, has been appointed coach and trainer of the Olympic club athletes.”

The story went on to say that Holway had run against the best professional men of the day in America, Australia, New Zealand, and England. “Two years ago he won the professional 100 yards and 220 yards championships of New Zealand, and holds the New Zealand record for 150 yards in 14 3-ssec.| At Wigan, England, October 23, 1909, he defeated the mighty Postle over 100 yards in 9 3-ssec,” the newspaper said. In his letter, Mr Holway said he intended to visit New Zealand in the middle of the year.
