ISLAND OF PRINCESS
Indian Seeks Return
(NX. Press Assn.—Copyright) VICTORIA (B. Columbia), Feb. 8. A Canadian Indian has demanded that Princess Margaret give back an island in the Strait of Georgia. Mr Frank Calder, the only Indian member of the Provincial Legislature, castigated the Government yesterday for giving Princess Margaret the island in the first place. United Press International reported. In 1958. when the Princess was visiting Canada, the Government turned the 545acre island over to her. Mr Calder said the Government had no right whatsoever to hand over Portland Island (now Margaret Island) to the Princess because the British Columbia Indians were never paid for it. He demanded the Government ask Princess Margaret to return the island.
But the Government apparently has no intention of doing anything about Mr Calder's demands. "We gave it to her, title and deed, period,” a Government spokesman said.
