P.S. SALARIES AND WAGES

1957.58 Figures Submitted

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 8.

There were no public servants in the year 1957-58 receiving salaries in excess of £4OOO per annum and only three ■who received £3OOO and under £4OOO, said the Government statistician, Mr J. V. T. Baker, in submissions to the Royal Commission on State Services today. Outside the service a total of 479, or .08 per cent, of all salary and wage earners, received over £4OOO and 999 or .17 per cent, of all salary and wage earners received £3OOO and under £4OOO. A total of 34,950 or 99.51 per cent, of the total engaged in the Public Service received salaries of under £2OOO and 167 received £2OOO and under £3OOO.

Comparative figures for all salary and wage earners showed that 563,278 or 98.8 per cent, received under £2OOO and 4990 or .88 per cent, received £2OOO and under £3OOO.

Had the proportions in the higher salary groups been the same in the Public Service as for all salary and wage earners, the Public Service would have had 309 instead of 167 in the £2OOO and under £3OOO group, 60 instead of three in the £3OOO and under £4OOO group, and 28 instead of none in the over £4OOO group.
