NEW PHYSICS TEACHING
Trial At Four Schools Four Canterbury post-pri-mary schools are among the 18 selected throughout the Dominion for a trial of an advanced American method of teaching physics which may ultimately be introduced at all secondary schools in New Zealand. They are Christ’s College. Christchurch Boys’ High School, Linwood High School and Timaru Boys' High School. This week they have held introductory classes on the new approach in sixth forms and special equipment and explanatory films will be delivered very soon. Teachers conducting the new course had special guidance from two American professors at a seminar in Auckland. Professor G. Finlay of the University of Illinois and Professor S. Machlup, of the University of Cleveland, described the new method which was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then adapted for schools by a physical science study committee. The new method concentrates on major principles of physics rather than technical skills.
