TENNIS WILDING SHIELD

Teams Drawing 3-3 (N.Z. Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, February 9. Auckland and Wellington were level at three matches each after the first day's play in the Wilding Shield lawn tennis match at the Stanley street courts today. In a series of hit-and-miss affairs, troubled by a strong, gusty cross-court wind, each won two doubles and a singles.

A surprise was the defeat of Auckland's J. E Robson, the South Island champion, who lost a dreary match to 19-year-old J. B. Souter, by 6-4, 6-4.

R. N. Hawkes (Wellington) suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of A. S. Burns, who avenged his loss in the recent invitation tournament, winning in two sets. 6-3, 6-1. Results (Auckland names first):—
