ASSAULT RIVER CROSSING AT LAKE TEKAPO.—On Tuesday evening the 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, made an opposed river crossing over a small tarn near Lake Tekapo. The assault was part of “Exercise Shakedown.” During the afternoon the battalion practised for the assault. TOP: Folding boats of armed troops leave the “friendly” side of the river for the enemy bank about 150 yards away. BOTTOM: The command post utility vehicle, loaded on an assault raft constructed by the battalion Pioneers, is ferried across to the enemy bank after the first assault waves have landed.
