King George V
Sir, —Apropos of your leading article this morning, the following story, much repeated at the time, strikes me as apposite: When the King was dangerously ill in 1929 a senior and influential member of a Pall Mall or Piccadilly club went in a taxi to Buckingham Palace to see the latest bulletin on the gates. On his return to the taxi after taking a long time to reach the railings, he said to the driver, “In giving the fare, don’t forget that time.” “Not on yer life; 'e’s my king as much as ’e is yers.”— Yours, etc., LBS. February 5, 1962.
