(N.Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 3 Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery appeared in a new role today—as a cricket commentator. He was ready to put his shirt on the underdogs. Lord Montgomery entered the cricket ground broadcasting box to give his views on the progress of play between South Africa and New Zealand in the fourth unofficial test match. At the time, the South Africans J. McGlew and R. McLean, were dominating the New Zealand bowling. Lord Montgomery promptly declared the New Zealanders had great qualities for fighting back. "I know, because they were with me in the desert," he said “They are great with their backs to the wall." At that moment there was a burst of applause and shouts of, “He's out, he's out, he’s out.” It was Lord Montgomery telling listeners that McGlew bad been run out for 120. Then came McLean’s dis- f missal immediately afterwards.
“Their tails are up,” said Lord Montgomery gleefully. After recalling again the sterling fighting abilities of New Zealanders, Lord Montgomery took his leave from the microphone by saying, ‘‘Thank you, for listening to me.”
