THREE PRIZE WINNERS

The “Typical Teen-ager” (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 4 Three Australian girls arrived in Auckland on Saturday with one thing in common—they were all on prize-winning trips. Miss S. James, aged 17, from Sydney, was starting a tour of New Zealand, the first prize for winning the ‘‘Typical Teenager of New South Wales” competition. Miss H. Meehan, an 18-year-old bank clerk from Melbourne, was on her way to San Francisco, the reward for collecting £5021 towards a children’s hospital. Miss M. McLennan, an 18-year-old stenographer, who finished second to Miss Meehan with £4238, won a trip to New Zealand.

Miss James, who is accompanied by her mother, Mrs W. E. James, was asked if she considered herself a •• typical teenager.” She replied: “No, but my mother reckons so when she sees my bedroom,” Miss James was chosen from 2000 girls. Entrants were judged on sporting abilities, hobbles, education and personality. Her success has plunged her into a whirl of fashion parades, modelling and a television commercial for milk.

Miss Meehan and Miss McLennan were both accompanied by chaperons. There were 74 girls in the contest which aimed at raising £42.000 for the Royal Children's Hospital project in Melbourne. Most were sponsored by organisations, clubs or employers. Miss Meehan entered as “Miss Shipping.”
