Fine Weather, Record Entries For Jubilee Show At Little River

The fiftieth jubilee show of the Banks Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Association at the Awa-iti Domain at Little River opened on Saturday in perfect show weather. Later in the day, however, the skyclouded over and there were some heat showers. Later still the weather cleared.

Entries were at a record at 2029, compared with the previous record of 1 <6B last year. Gate takings amounted to £lB7, compared with £199 last year. Membership of the association, however, has increased by 38 in the last year.

From early in the morning the ground filled with cars and there was a good attendance. As well as the record entries in the competitive classes there was good eupport trim industrial firms in the trade exhibits section. A photograph of bullock teams at an earlier show, as a frontispiece in the jubilee snow catalogue, was a reminder of the days when these were a feature of the Little River show, and timber milling, as the land was cleared, was an important industry.

Three members of the original committee of the association were honoured bybeing driven in an open car at the head of the grand parade They were Messrs T Masefield 'Akaroa), E. J Keenan (Christchurch) and H Kimber (Hornby). First Show Mr Kimber was one of those responsible for the formation of the association in 1909 and helped with the organisation of the first show in November of that year Syme years later the show was changed to its present time, at the beginning of February.

Among those watching the ehow were Mesdames T. Masefield and J. A. Armstrong, both of Akaroa, who were both competitors in the riding classes at the first Little River show. Both had giandchildren competing in the show on Saturday.

The grand parade was led by the City of Christen uroh Highland Pipe Band and the horses were headed by the champion hack. Miss S. Williams's Brussells. The cattle were led by W. G. King and Sons champion Ayrshire bull, which w-as also champion of all breeds. Judges’ Comments Horse and pony classes were well supported and many of the entries were well known in Canterbury show rings. There was an over-all good standard of riding and the horses and ponies were well brought out. The ring was in very good condition and this was reflected in the standard of jumping. The judge for the hack classes. Mrs L. L. Bevins Coutts Island), said there was a good average standard equal to other Canterbury shows. The champion hack. Miss S. Williams’s Brussells. was a very good type of horse. It stepped a little short in the walk, but this was not noticeable in the trot, she said. The reserve champion hack. r own by Miss A. Bedford, was closely contested by Miss A. Smith’s Shame. Each had slight faults which the other lacked. In the best woman rider class, which Mrs Bevins also judged, there was close competition between the top four. The final decision was made on the standard of turn-out. she said. Pony Classes Pony classes were of a very high standard, the judge. Mr W. R. E. Booker (Hawarden), said There were many good ponies entered and they were brought out in very good condition.

Mr Booker said there was keen competition in the riding classes and the top riders were hard to separate. He was particularly pleased to see the number of small children, aged from three to six. who were competing in the led class. "They are the competitors of tomorrow.” Mr Booker said.

In the jumping classes Mr Booker was impressed with the number of ponies and the high standard of jumping in spite of the very hard ground. There was little balking at the jumps, he said.

There was a good showing of sheep and. although a number of the entries showed the effects of the season, the general standard was very good. In spite of the unfavourable conditions there was good competition tn the crossbred classes of the flock sheep. Romney Marsh

Judging the Romney Marsh section. Mr W. A. Buchan i Ashburton), said that considering the season the sheep were well brought out. The winners of each class were right up to country show standard. Sheep from more favoured areas—the peninsula had been very dry—had made the judging difficult, Mr Buchan said.

Mr T L. Jenkins (Sheffield), who judged the Southdowns, said the top sheep were well up to the standard and the sheep were generally very well brought out. The champions showed especially good breed character, he said. Judging the crossbred sheep classes. Mr A. C. Wright (Dunsandel), said that for flock sheep under commercial conditions more attention needed to be paid to wool quality. Entries were not large in the

Ayrshire cattle classes, but they showed food breed character, said the judge. Mr C. H. Heywood <Spnng a ton>. While lhe yearling heifers were very good die cows showed the eft ecu of the dry summer and the calves appeared to show the lack of green feed.

What the Friesian cattle lacked in numbers was more than made up m the standard of quality, said Mr C W. Humm (Waikuku), who judged the section. E. J. Stalker’s cow, which was awarded the breed championship and also the all breeds championship, was top of the proavetion class and would stand in any company, die judge said.
