THIRD WIN

Otago Quadrant To Fantastic The Waimakariri boat Fantastic, skippered by G. J. Cooke, with his younger brother, C. J. Cooke, as crew, this weekend won the Otago Quadrant Trophy for the third consecutive year. The trophy series was sailed at Port Chalmers and is generally regarded as a South Island championship event for the R class. High southerly winds made the three-race series a stern test of boats and crews. The only boat to concern the Cookes was the Invercargill dinghy Conflict <R. Paine and R. Anderson, of Dunedin*. Conflict was second to Fantastic in the first race; and looked to have the second heat won. with Fantastic astern, but the top of its rudder broke off and Paine had to nurse his craft home.

The second race had its course shortened in the teeth of a strong sou’-wester Paine sailed with two reefs; Cooke with two rolls in his main; but the third boat to finish—the Canterbury Yacht Club dinghy Reply sailed by G J. Good and J B Simpson —carried full sail. Sixteen boats sailed in the series. Results were:— first Heat.—Fantastic <G. J arid G J Cooke. Waimakariri). 12:10.5/, I; Conflict (R. Paine and R. Anderson.
