MILL FIRM’S THREAT

“Much More To Be Said”

(N.Z.P .A. -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, February 3

The Lancashire cotton firm. Smith and Nephew, said today it would, if necessary, “publish all the facts” about its £sm cotton mill project in Nelson. An agreement on the project, which would have guaranteed 80 per cent, of the New Zealand market for certain lines, was signed by the New Zealand Labour Government in August, 1960. This led to the formation of a new company, the Commonwealth Fabric Corporation, to build and operate the mill. The New Zealand Government terminated the agreemen in mid-January. The deputy-chairman of Smith and Nephew, Mr George Whittaker, said today that if statements from the New Zealand Government, or debates in both the British and New Zealand Parliaments made it necessary, the company would publish the full facts. Mr Whittaker added that there was “much more to be said” on the issue.
