AGREEMENT DEFENDED
Reply To Mr Holyoake
( N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 3.
"The description by the Prime Minister, Mr Holyoake, of the text of the Nelson cotton mill agreement is laughable," said the president of the New Zealand Labour Party (Dr. A. M. Finlay) in Auckland today. Mr Holyoake said last night that the agreement consisted of a letter from the former Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) to the British firm of Smith and Nephew and a letter from them in reply. Dr. Finlay said Mr Holyoake’s description “conveys a picture of Mr Holloway sitting down one week-end and dashing off a letter 'Dear Smith (or Nephew)’ and hav« ing a ‘Dear Phil’ reply two or three days later. “In fact, several months of detailed investigation and discussion culminated in an exchange of notes which were no doubt carefully phrased and scrutinised by responsible (including legal) officers of the ‘department concerned,’ " he said.
