Ford Loses To Lamb

AUCKLAND, January 22.

Rain brought an early finish to the first day of piaj ■in the New Zealand junior tennis championships, wh ! cn began in Auckland today, but there was still time for the first upset. The seventh-seeded G. G. Ford, of Canterbury, was eliminated in the first round by the Waikato junior, A. G. Lamb, who scored a con - vincing win, 6-3. 6-2. A strong cross-wind and humid conditions did no: make for good tennis. A steady shower stopped play at 2.30 p.m. Fifty matches in the singles events had been finished. Some doubles matches had begun, but none completed The New Zealand senior singles finalist, I. Crooken den, of Waikato, the top eel in the under 19 boys singles, had an easy second round victory over M. Radford, of Wellington, winning 6-0, 6-1. P. Roth drew byes in the first round and did not play today. The Auckland senior women’s champion, Miss Ann Smith, entered the quarterfinals of the under 19 girls’ singles by defeating Miss 11. E. Kidd, of Waikato, 6-3, S-l. The third seed, Miss Pat O’Carroll, of Northland, had to fight for the second set of her first round match against Miss M. R. Gurney of Auckland, but eventually won 6-3, 7-5.
