NO APPEARANCE OF SWIMMER

Brighton-Timaru Attempt

Mr J. T. May. of Christchurch, who announced on Sunday that he would attempt to swim from New Brighton pier to Timaru, was not popular at New Brighton yesterday morning when he failed to appear at 9 o’clock, the time he had set for the start of his attempt. The greatest disappointment was among a substantial eallery of small boys A number of adults also gathered on the beach. Reporters and photographers waiting on the beach felt the same way as most of the spectators—that Mr May’s proposition was far-fetched and impossible of fulfilment. Nobody on the beach had any serious thought that he would get very far after looking at '.he looming distance from New Brighton to the cliffs of Banks Penisula which would only be a fraction of the tourney

A police constable from New Brighton and a traffic officer as well as the patrolman on duty at the surf club mnscientiously waited for a f ull half-hour “I’ll be going now I think I have something bettar to do" said the notice officer The traffic officer excused himself saying it was time for him o have his morning tea.

Nothing relieves and ventilates the mind like a resolution.—John Burroughs.
