A remarkable feature of the first day's play in the open singles at the New Zealand croquet championships yesterday was that none of the matches played was taken to three games. The matches were played at the United, St. Martins, and Fendalton lawns.
H. Ford (Wellington) showed fine form in beating L. Mitchell (Christchurch) Ford, playing some excellent breaks, gave Mitchell no quarter in the second game and Mitchell could not gain a point. Mrs E M Todd (Christchurch) had a comfortable victory as did O Anderson (Christchurch) against Mrs C Treadgold (Auckland)
F. W Gurnsey (Christchurch) beat A. E Saalfield (New South Wales). 26-8. 26-21 In the first game Gurnsey gave the Australian no chance, but in the second game Saalfield became more accustomed to the lawns Results were:—
