SHIELD CRICKET B. A. Bolton Takes Seven For 23 Against Central

“The Press" Special Service

NELSON, January 18. The Canterbury leg-spinner, B. A. Bolton, put his side in an excellent, position against Central Districts today when he took seven wickets for 23 of the 185 runs Central managed to score. A docile pitch at Trafalgar Park, Nelson, gave promise of yielding a bountiful harvest of runs, but the ineptitude of the Central batsmen, who had first use of it, reduced the harvest to drought proportions. Canterbury, in the 58 minutes remaining before stumps, had scored 38 for one wicket.

It was by no means a rewarding day's cricket Central's openers, L. B. Reade

and G. E. Lowans, gave the side an excellent start with 74 before the partnership was broken, and B. E. Congdon helped consolidate before the second wicket fell at 130. The remaining eight wickets, however, fell for only 55 runs. The credit for this belongs to Bolton, but the fact also remains that the Central batsmen on the whole, pushed and prodded their wickets away. The runs were there to make, but only 185 could be scored in the 316 minutes they batted. The teams were: Central Districts: D. V. Spence (captain), L. B. Reade G. E; Lowans, B. E. Congdon.R. Kelly, 1 B. Leggat. M. G. Shrimpton, B. L. Hampton. L. Mummery, J. Vernon. D. Kinsella, P Maunder (twelfth man). Canterbury: A. R. Mac Gibbon (captain), B. A. Bolton, I. R. Hartland, B G. Hadlee. B. F. Hastings, D. L. Gallop, D. Hill. A. G. Duckmanton. J. W. Kiddey, J. E. England. J. H. Dawson, D. S. McKendry (twelfth man). Surprise Dismissal Reade and Lowans, untroubled throughout their 74 partnership, scored slowly against fairly tight bowling and fielding. Reade's dismissal was quite surprising. He had batted with aplomb and caution, cutting and gliding nicely. Lowans took a little

longer tn which to settle down, but he also was untroubled on a pitch which was all in his favour. Reade was out in attempting to push Kid-ley to mid-wicket, but in so doing spooned an easy catch to Gallop at wide midon. In this opening period MacGibbon used five bowlers, but with the exception of Kiddey, who had an analysis of one for 17 off 17 overs at lunch, and Duckmanton, whose teasing flight drew the batsmen forward into playing shots, the attack was not very inspiring. Five of Duckmanton's first six overs were maidens. By lunch Central had scored 87 for its one wicket loss and the 100 was reached 21 minutes after lunch. Congdon occasionally was aggressive, but the scoring rate continued in the same leisurely manner as before the luncheon break. There was little of note in the match until Bolton was brought on. With his second ball he tempted Congdon into another of the drives he had been favouring, and held the sizzling catch. Kelly, the incoming batsman, similarly succumbed to Bolton in his next over. He drove a wellflighted ball, and was caught by Hartland at long-on. Leggat's Lives, Leggat, a batsman who seldom fails to awaken life in any match, soon had the crowd on its toes. In the second over he faced from Bolton he played a similar shot to that which saw Congdon’s dismissal, but Bolton, hampered by stumps, could only get a hand to it. Within minutes Leggat survived a second chance when he chopped a ball from Gallop on to the ground and slowly on to the stumps. The bails shivered but held. Leggat then mistimed a pull and saw the ball fall safely only 10 yards from the stumps. A few minutes later he was dropped at long-on by Hartland. AH this occured within 20 minutes. Bolton, who was getting considerable turn struck the next blow for Canterbury when he had Lowans caught behind by England. Lowans had played a chanceless innings for his 57 in 250 minutes At this stage Bolton's analysis was 9.1 overs 6 maidens 8 runs 3 wickets and at tea Central had lost four for 156 Within 12 minutes of the resumption Hartland made no mistake with the second catch given him by Leggat. to give Duckmanton his first wicket Captains' Pact An agreement between the captains not to wait an umpire’s decision in the case of a genuine catch, was honoured by Spence when he was caught by Hill at slip off Bolton The umpire. Mr Quin, ton. had made no decision

before Spence commenced walking back to the stand. The wickets continued to tumble. Shrimpton put a breath of life into the game with his beautifully correct driving, but in playing a half-hearted shot to mid-off found a diving Bolton take a one-handed catch off his own bowling. Mummery attempted to sweep Ducljmanton and was leg before, Vernon was picked up at silly mid-on by Gallop off Bolton, and Kinsella, attempting to swing Bolton’s next ball had his wickets shattered. Hampton, the not out batsman, used his feet well and showed more aggression than any of the other lower order batsmen. The credit of Central’s collapse must go to Bolton, and to no less an extent, to the Canterbury fieldsmen. All but two chances—one of them a difficult one—were accepted. Bolton and Hartland found little in the Central opening attack to worry them and both set out to score runs. Hartland was unfortunate to lose his wicket five minutes before stumps when, in playing a ball from Leggat well nutside his off stump, he found an inside edge and chopped it on to his stumps.
