A 17-year-old youth with a passion for watching shipping along the wharves saved a man’s life today

On has way home from work, shortly after 6 p.m, Neville Hardy noticed a crowd gathered around the coaster Paroto.

Joining the crowd he was told a seaman had been found Boating in the harbour On the rear deck of the Paroto a police sergeant was applying artificial respiration using the Schaeffer method Neville, a well-built lad, stepped on board the vessel and took over from the sergeant. For 15 minutes he worked on the seaman using the mouth-to-mouth method until the man regained consciousness.

The wharf police praised Neville’s quick action. “There is no question about it, he started the man breathing again.” said a police sergeant tonight. Neville, who works for the Post Office, was modest about his achievement. He said he was “quite pleased” that he had been able to save a man’s life. He learnt the new resuscitation method at St John Ambulance classes. The seaman, Mr S. J. Williams, of Lower Hutt, was in Wellington Hospital tonight where his condition was fair. It is not known how he fell into the harbour.
