Khrushchev's Confidence (N.ZJ>A.-Reuter— Copyright) CAIRO, January 16. The Soviet Minister of Power Stations (Mr Ignat Novikov) said In Cairo today he had handed President Nasser a Note from Mr Khrushchev in which ths Soviet Prime Minister expressed confidence that the first stage of the Aswan High Dam will be completed by 1964 Mr Novikov, who has been in Cairo since January 5 and inspected work at Aswan, told a press conference last night that in the last two years Arab and Soviet engineers have completed a great part of the auxiliary work, building roads, railways. water and electric supply lines. About 3.900,000 cubic yards of hard rock have been excavated for the upstream and downstream canals, and about 220 yards of tunnels dug. Mr Novikov said During 1961, about 3.400.000 cubic yards were excavated. “So far as I know, sueh a volume of rock removal has never before been done at any hydro-eleetric construction site in the world.” he said. It was planned to excavate more than 5.000,000 cubic yards of granite in 1962, he said.
