CARDIGAN BAY FOR PERTH

Decision Pleases W.A.T.A. (N Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. Jan. 17. The decision of Cardigan Bay’s owner, Mrs A D. Dean, of Auckland, to reverse original plans and send the horse to Perth for the InterDominion Championships both “surprised and delighted” the Western Australian Trotting Association. This was stated yesterday by Mr D. Keys, the assistantsecretary of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, in Christchurch.

Mr Keys said he had been speaking to the association by telephone. “They were surprised but very delighted.” Mr Keys said as soon as it was known that Cardigan Bay was to make the trio, the conference got in touch with the Western Australian Association with a view to a fourth subsidy of £5OO being given.

“The association agreed readily.” he said. “The conference had already decided to make a fourth subsidy of £250 for New Zealand horses, too The owners of Dandy Andy, however, have since decided to scratch their horse.”

Mr Keys said the executive of the conference was concerned about reports that the owners of some horses had not been advised by the conference of a subsidy additional to that offered by the Western Australian Association.

“Originally, the three approved horses to be given the subsidy were Cardigan Bay. Massacre and Aldora. As all three had been stated to be non-starters. Canyon, Dandy Andy and Blue were selected. “In the case of Dandy Andy, whose part-owner, Mr G. A. Baker, is reported to have said he had heard nothing about it, a telegram was sent on January 11 to the other part-owner, Mr J. R Angelo, of Whangarei,” he said. “As soon as it was known that Cardigan Bay would be going after all, we wired Mrs Dean on Monday, offering the £250 subsidy.”
