Product “Losing Favour”
“I wish to assure you that 1 am keenly aware of the difficulties faced in the Blackball district and the problem of finding markets for a product which is losing favour with the consumer.” said the Minister of Mines (Mr Shand), in a letter to the secretary of the West Coast Trades Council (Mr J Doyle), of Greymouth “A large amount of money has beei expended this year (1961) in an endeavour to find an outlet for these two types of coal which have their own particular properties.” continued the Minister. “Investigations into briqi.ettiqg. combustion equipment. gasification, etc., have been made and at the present time Dr. Stott, of the Otago School of Mines Is in Great Britain looking into the coal utilisation matters there
"Highly skilled fuel technologist* are employed throughout the country to advise the consumer on how to use these coals, but whether we like it or not we must face the fact that they are not popular.
“These investigations will con’inuc. and everything possible will be done to find markets for these valuable assets.” Mr Shand concluded,
