West New Guinea
Sir,—Another "Dutchman” recently wrote an article to the “New Zealand Monthly Review” backing Indonesia’s claim to New Guinea and attacking “Right-wing Dutch colonial diehards.” This article, like your correspondent’s letter, totally omitted one thing: the existence of a native people in New Guinea. It is these people whose rights must be defended. Which side we think right in the past quarrels between Left-wing Indonesians and Right-wing Dutch colonialists, is quite irrelevant. Moreover, if from [selfinterest, we do not defend the rights of these Papuans, we may find 20 years hence that 150 million Indonesians will suddenly realise that Australia and New Zealand are also "Dutch” territory, since Abel Tasman discovered them.— Yours, etc.. MARK D SADLER. January 17, 1962.
