STAGGERED HOLIDAYS
Talks Idea Welcomed (N.Z, Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. The idea of discussions among interested organisations to try to achieve staggered holidays in New Zealand, as suggested by the Travel and Holidays Association chief executive, Mr N. E. Lobb, was welcomed at Wellington today. No-one was more delighted at the prospect than Mr G. Barker, who has been agitating for the last 10 years for such a move.
A travel agent with considerable overseas experience, he feels that the matter should be discussed at top government level with all sections of the community who are affected by the virtual close-down of the country over the Christmas-New Year period. State services must be available when the community wanted them and the Public Service Commission would welcome a forum on the subject of staggered holidays. said the chairman, Mr L. A. Atkinson.
The general manager of the Tourist Hotel Corporation. Mr E. C. Colbeck, said the corporation had always been in favour of trying to spread the flow of tourists over as great a part of the year as possible. If New Zealanders took their holidays in what are now the off-seasons they could take advantage of more economic tariffs.
He would be strongly in favour of a forum of all interested organisations, he said.
