Big Prize Goes To Four In Family

AUCKLAND, January 8.

A Whakatane retired farmer’s wife, Mrs Catherine Doherty, and three of her seven children, Mary (24), Michael (23), and Veronica (19), will share the first prize of £12,000 in the third Golden Kiwi lottery, drawn in Wellington this morning.

“This is the first ticket I've bought and I never dreamt I'd be the winner,'' a thrilled Mrs Doherty said in a telephony interview today. "The four tickets were bought in my name, but Mary, Michael and Veronica all have an equal share,” she said. The big win will mean: For Mary, a trip overseas. For Michael, who is a Bay of Plenty Rugby representa-

tive, a big "shout” for his friends. For Veronica—due to be married to the Bay of Plenty Rugby player S. Anderton—a wonderful wedding. And for Mrs Doherty—nothing definite yet. A “Shout” Michael Doherty, who works on the family’s 200acre farm at Piripai, six miles from Whakatane, heard the news from hi* younger brother, Kerry. The news did not sink in until the well-known Whakatane Rugby executive, Mr N. Cooper, told Michael over the telephone: "I hear you want to hire St. Joseph’s Hall.” “Whatever for?” he was asked. "For a shout,” Mr Cooper replied. Michael then agreed. There are seven children in the Doherty family. Their father is Mr Adrian Doherty, a well known bowler.
