LONDON. Jan. 7. Lord Snowdon, the husband of Princess Margaret, will return to the world of photography and become a paid artistic adviser to the "Sunday Times’* as from February 1. Major John Griffin, press secretary at Clarence House, the London residence of the Queen Mother, where Princess Margaret's baby was recently born, said Lord Snowdon had discussed the new job with Princess Margaret and the Queen before accepting it.
The editor of the "Sunday Times.’’ Mr C. D. Hamilton, said tonight: "It is a real job of work. The appointment is the logical sequel to Lord Snowdon’s earlier photographic career.”
Lord Snowdon, formerly Mr Antony Armstrong-Jones, would occasionally be taking photographs himself, Mr Hamilton said. "Lord Snowdon is not going to work on the hot side of newspaper work, which might be an embarrassment to him and we shall not be taking advantage in any way of his connexion with the Royal Family by way of asking him to take any Royal pictures,” he said. Lord Snowdon will be briefing reporters and photographers on project initially associated with a colour magazine the “Sunday Times” plans to bring out on February 4. “He will also be available for consultation on the high-class books and quality magazines, both existing and projected,” Mr Hamilton said. Lord Snowdon will continue his connexions with the Council for Industrial Design, where he has been working daily in an unpaid capacity since January last year, but only on a consultative basis.
"He will now be on call for advice as the occasion arises.” the council’s director, Mr Paul Reilly, said.
Outlining the background to the appointment, Mr Hamilton said: “Lord Snowdon is uniquely qualified for the job which we offered. Lord Snowdon at the time of his engagement was one of the outstanding photographers in this country—if not in the world. He was at the very height of his creative powers as a photographer. . . .
“I therefore some weeks ago made an approach to him on behalf of the ‘Sunday Times’ and asked if he would like to join us an artistic adviser which would give him a very broad umbrella under which he could work for us. “Lord Snowdon thought it over and after consulting various people decided to accept our offer. The appointment is salaried and carries -the normal expenses of such a job.” Princess Margaret and her husband are at present' in Antigua in the West Indies for a short holiday and will return a few days before Lord Snowdon takes up the appointment.
