ABORIGINES RECOVERING
N. Territory Epidemic (NZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) DARWIN, Jan. 7. A mystery virus, which swept through far Northern Territory missions and affected 3000 aborigines, is now abating. The Director of Health in the Territory. Dr. J. Byrne, said some aborigines had recovered already and gone back to work. Others were assisting mission sisters in caring for others still sick, he added. The infection struck the territory at the Methodist mission on Elcho Island, off the north coast. It. immediately spread across the top of the Northern Territory putting six missions to work under epidemic conditions. The virus affected the upper respiratory tracts and put aborigines to bed by the thousands. Some Europeans were also affected. Celebration* End.—Western Samoa's independence week celebrations ended yesterday with Fautasi boat racing on Apia Harbour and a garden party at Government House, Vailima.—Apia, January 6.
