NEW EMBLEM FOR N.Z.
Romney Breeders’ Suggestion “The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, January 3. Sheep breeders have a new candidate to replace the kiwi as a national emblem. The retiring president of the New Zealand Romney Marsh Sheep Breeders’ Association (Mr J. R. Matthews) has suggested that, because of the New Zealand dependence on sheep, the Romney ram could have more meaning as a national emblem than the kiwi.
Two-thirds of New Zealand export earnings came from the sheep and its products, he said. The association ha* estimated that 75 per cent, of the country’s sheep population—about 48 million—have Romney ancestry.
