SIGHTING AT SEA
Object Off Otago
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Jan. 4.
An object which might have been the snorkel or periscope of a submerged submarine was sighted by the Signalman on duty at Taiaroa Heads, Otago Harbour, at 9 am. today. In his report to the Navy Office, the signalman said that the object was outside the three-mile limit. As is its usual practice in the case of similar sightings, the Navy Office asked aircraft in the area to look out for the object. United States Antarctic headquarters at Harewood and the National Airways Corporation were among those warned of the sighting and asked to keep a look out.
A Naval spokesman said tonight that no further sightings had been made before dusk.
