Air Pollution
Sir,—The district traffic officer of the Railways Department (Mr Brittenden) does not go far enough in his answer to my letter. He says there are a number of diesel engines already in use in the shunting yards at dhristehurch, but there are also a number of steam locomotives belching out their filthy poisonous fumes all over this district. Until all those are taken off the shunting yards, the residents of Opawa, Wilsons road, and Waltham have still to go on suffering from their poison. The enormous amount of money the Government pays out for doctors’ prescriptions caused by the air being polluted by carbon monoxide and toxic fumes could be put to a better use by installing all diesel locomotives in the shunting yards—Yours, etc., OPAWA. WAKE UP. January 4, 1962.
