Akaroa Fire
Sir, —-Lest there by any doubt about the services rendered by the Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade, may I, as a witness of their efforts, state through the medium of your paper my sincere praise for their combined initiative and in many cases courage. Owing to the limited amount of equipment available to them, many of these men took unenviable risks of personal injury by heat, collapsing walls, and the possibility of the crashing of four very wobbly double-storey chimneys, to stop the fire spreading to adjacent buildings. Perhaps it should be pointed out that all these buildings are built of timber, dry with and on the north and south sides of the hotel were less than 30ft away from what can only be describe! as an inferno.— Yours, etc., P. C. BROWN. January 4, 1962.
