2500 Arrests, Six Killed

Security forces swooping on Beirut suburbs and villages have arrested about 2500 people in a massive round-up following last Sunday’s abortive coup, it was reported in Beirut today.
Six members of the Nationalist Social Party—blamed for the coup attempt—were killed while trying tq, escape, an official statement said. Officials said, however, that they knew nothing of Bagdad reports that the former President. Mr Camille Chamoun was under house arrest. They said he had “nothing to do” with last Sunday’s incidents.
Today’s official statement said that Nationalist Social Party leaflets described as “important” and two boxes of ammunition, including dum-dum bullets, had been seized in a party members’ house near Beirut. An announcement last night said that two villages regarded as party stror !- holds had been shelled when security forces met resistance to their round-up operations.
