WORKS BUSY AT START
Heavy Run Of Lambs
Heavy demands on the killing capacities of the nine freezing works in the Canterbury industrial district, from Nelson to Pareora, will be made during the next six weeks. The works opened yesterday. The run of lambs for killing is expected to continue for the next three weeks at least. When it slows, there will be a heavy demand for the killing of ewes culled from farmers’ flocks. The abnormally dry weather coupled with the demand in the United Kingdom for lightweight lambs has meant that few if any ewes have been accepted for killing at any of the works so far this season. Because of the weather and consequent lack of green feed, the farmers are as anxious to be rid of culled ewes as they are of the lambs. Little absenteeism was reported at any of the works when the men returned from the holiday break, which began on December 22.
