ANTARCTIC SHIPS
Three In Port
Yesterday
Once again, for the second week in succession, there were three Antarctic ships in Lyttelton Harbour yesterday morning. They were the naval tanker Elkhorn, due to sail for McMurdo Sound tomorrow, the cargo ship Arneb which arrived from Wellington, and the Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind which sailed for Cape Hallett later in the day. This is the first time the Arneb has been to Lyttelton this season. She was to have called on her way to the Antarctic last month, but went direct to McMurdo Sound from Panama, as her cargo was urgently needed. She arrived on December 13 and sailed for Wellington on December 18. The Arneb loaded 4500 drums of diesel fuel and 500 drums of aviation fuel at Wellington. She will load another 2500 drums of diesel fuel at Lyttelton and general cargo, stores and provisions. The Arneb is expected to sail for McMurdo Sound on January 8. She will return to Wellington from the Antarctic after discharging her cargo.
Captain S. A. Bobczynski, of Norfolk, Virginia, commands the Arneb. His executive officer is Commander W. J. Cherwinski. About 30 per cent, of the Arneb's crew were at Lyttelton last season. The icebreaker Glacier is due from Wellington this evening, after drydocking and repairs to her damaged propeller. She is expected to sail for McMurdo Sound on January 10.
