PALMERSTON NTH., Jan. 3 The North Island Iswn tennis championships at Palmerston North got away to a good start this morning .after a postponement of a day’s play because of heavy rain. Today the courts were dry and hard, but the enervating heat made many of the players tire early in the day. and rounds were not able to be completed as scheduled. It .is expected the championshibs will be finished by Friday as scheduled.
All the seeded players are through the first round of the men's singles. Tbe closest game was between L. Greene and C. Sheerin. Sheerin Is a former Manawatu champton and representative and this is bls first tournament for four years. Greene won. 7-5, 8-4. Playing In the women's championship singles Is Mrs F. Lobb, formerly Miss F. Laird, another former Manawatu champion who now lives in Auckland.
