Promising Display By Water Polo Team

pANTERBURY water polo, which has not been particularly strong in the last three seasons, took a turn for the better on Wednesday' evening when the province's representatives made a brave showing against the very proficient team from the Melbourne Swimming Club. Melbourne won 6-3, but the home team was by no means disgraced. The Canterbury player* deserved credit for their wilk ingness to wait patiently for an opening. Against such a team as Melbourne, it was vital to retain possession, and not waste it with hopeless shots at goal from well out. The manner in which Canterbury tried to switch play across the goal mouth to catch Melbourne out of position was most praiseworthy.

In recent season* Canterbury's water polo strength has depended heavily upon the more experienced players—the brothers N. and C. Chambers, R. Henry. H. Sellout, J. de Haan, T. Harn* and B. MacNeilage.

Wednesday's display* by some of the younger group, notably B. Monk in goal and P. Hatchwell, give hope for the future. With L. Mclntosh, G. Doyle. I. Farquhar, I. McKenzie, R. Blair. Q. Dann and M. Scot!, Canterbury could build a strong side in the next few reasons. Had Canterbury had th* services of Henry, Blair, Mclntosh and MacNeMag* in the match against Melbourne the home teem could have gone very close to victory
