BOW BELLS RANG OUT IN LONDON on December 29 for the first time in 29 years. The Duke of Edinburgh pulled the rope in the tower housing the famous bells which have been recast. In 1941 the tower was reduced to a shell by German bombs and the 12 bells crashed to the ground. The Duke, who is shown with the rector, the Rev. Joseph McCulloch, pulled the rope six times, then walked to the main building of the church to hear the full peal ring out. Tradition says that only people born within the sound of the bells in the Church of St. Mary le Bow, Cheapside, are real Cockneys.
