MORNING COFFEE
Demand For Silverware (By ZALIA THOMAS] LONDON, Dec. 8. Morning coffee parties, which have replaced calling or being "at home” for afternoon tea in the modem young housewife's social round, have caused a tremendous demand for silver coffee services. Previously. the average household would have a ‘‘best” tea service but a coffee set is now also a must. Many silversmiths have been inundated with orders for tea and coffee sets in the same style which has begun a trend for interchangeable silver since. Being in the same pattern, the sugar bowl can be used for both services and very often the coffee pot does duty in the afternoon as a hot water jug on the tea table. When a coffee set is bought on its own. it is usually in the three-piece sets—hot milk jug, coffee pot and sugar bowl. A cream jug is sometimes added later. As the morning coffee party is a young housewife's habit, designers in silver have been quick to realise the de. rnand for contemporary, yet graceful styles. This fusion of traditional grace with a style that is adver’urous has produced some of the best results in silverware design today—coffee sets that have smooth, fluid lines, often in tall, tapered dyles which are as easy to look at as thev are to clean the latter a very important consideration to young wives).
