CYCLING Combined Clubs’ Meeting At English Park

Conditions were the best this season for the Combined Cycling Clubs’ weekly meeting at English Park last night. The absence of wind and the warm night made for good cycling and excellent racing and brilliant finishes were seen. J. Croft showed marked improvement in form and rode well to win the twolap handicap. A great duel was seen between the Woodgate brothers in the final sprint of the fourlap’ B grade handicap. W Woodgate appeared to be shading N. Woodgate, but over the last few yards N. Woodgate got up to win by a tyre.

The finish of th< eight-lap handicap had the crowd on their feet. Coming into the bottom banking for the last time. R. Harrison, from the middle of the field, went high on the banking to move very fast and go right round the field to take the lead, with Brown following. Brown managed to get up to take the decision by half a wheel, with B. Spencer third.

Excellent riding was seen in the five-mile scratch event with the pace on all the way Just After the bell there was some blatant switching by the leading riders. This caused some of the riders to tangle and two fell but were not injured. A great battle was seen in the final sprint between Brown, D. Swanston and L. Lock. Brown just got ahead of Swanston. with Lock up for third place.

In the amateur events, P. Clemence, who was having his first ride in open company on the Lack, showed that he will soon be back on shorter handicaps. Last week Clemence was riding as a novice, but last night he extended the seasoned riders. His third in the onemile B grade scratch race was a great effort. The main amateur attraction was the half hour Madison. Ten two-man teams took part and brilliant team racing was seen Excellent change-overs were made and little speed was lost in the changes Between the points sprints, each of six laps, there were special sprints, which were keenly contested These special sprints were for prizes given by supporters, and as there were so many donors, sprints were coming one on top of the others.
