“MY FAIR LADY”

Theatre Given Extension

A provisional extension of the public building licence of the Theatre Royal has been granted by Cr. H. P. Smith acting on betialf of the City Council's by-laws committee, which was given power to act by the council. As a result the stage show ‘My Fajr Lady” will probably appear in the theatre next month fbr its only South Island showing The owners of the theatre have appealed to the Magistrate's Court against the reouirement of the Chief Fire Officer fMr L. R Osmond! f'r a sprinkler system to be installed in the siage area The appeal was scheduled to be heard in the Court in Christchurch yesterday, but an adjournment was granted Cr. Smith said he had agreed that the council grant the licence subject to the conditions that the chief fire officer's requirements were met by June 30 and that the owners of the building proceed with their apneal with due expedition in ruary‘‘lf the Court determines that the fire officer’s requirement is a reasonable one. then tht theatre owners will have to comply with it by the end of June to retain the licence.” Cr. Smith said. If the Court determined that the condition was unreasonable the council must accept that decision. “I imagine that the greatest interest of the public is whether ‘My Fair Lady’ will be allowed in the theatre.” Cr. Smith said “I am now given to understand that the show will be in Cnristchurch in the last week of January, which is earlier ,han we had expected."
