MOUNT COOK CLIMBED
Two Traverses At Week-End (H2. Press Association) TIMARU. Dec. 17. Two grand traverses of Mount Cock were completed during the week-end. A party of two led by Mr B. Herefield (Christchurch) flew from the Hermitage to the Grand Plateau and started their climb at 8 a.m. on Friday, completing the traverse on Saturday. Four climbers with Dr. L. Stewart (Invercargill) leading made the ascent from the Hooker glacier on Saturday, crossing by the Linda route. On their way they met Mr Herefield and his companion on the summit ridge. The Mount Cook National Park Board’s chief ranger <Mr J. L. Burke) said tonight that the weather over the week-end had been good. Another climbing party was at the Haast hut and hoped to make an attempt on Mount Cook tomorrow. 13 Persons In Crash Unhurt (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. December 17. Not one of the 13 persons involved in a spectacular three-car collision on the main Palmerston NorthHimitangi highway at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, was seriously injured. Two of the cars were travelling towards Palmerston North, and the other south. The largest of three late model cars, an American model carrying seven persons, collided with one of the first two cars, somersaulted three times, and came to rest 135 feet from the point of impact. The two smaller English cars collided a few minutes before. The driver of one of the smaller cars was Timothy Hoto. The other driver had left the scene. The American car was driven by Clement Robert Pullyn, who was travelling with his wife, his three children, and two other child passengers. Mrs Hewla May Pullyn was the only person injured, suffering lacerations to the knee.
