U.N. BONDS ISSUE
Financial TideOver (N Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 16. Eight countries today formally tabled a draft resolution in the United Nations Assembly’s budgetary committee proposing that the acting Secretary-General, U Thant. be authorised to make a £71500,000 bond issue to tide the United Nations over its present financial crisis. The bonds would bear interest at 2 per cent, a year. The committee approved by 48 votes to nine, with no abstentions, a record United Nations budget for 1962, calling for expenditure of about £29,270,440. The United Nations income is expected to total £5,022,000, and the 104 mem-ber-states will be assessed on the usual sliding scale for a total of £26.406,000. The negative votes were cast by the Soviet bloc, Truck-Driver Killed (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, December 17. A Palmerston North man was killed about six and a half miles from Takapau at 1.20 p.m. on Saturday when the late model seven-ton truck he was driving went off the road and struck a telegraph pole. He was Mr Bertie Ta’agamanusina Purcell, a Samoan. The pole was snapped about six feet from the ground and, in falling, extensively damaged the cab of the truck, causing the death of the driver. Mr Purcell was taken by ambulance to the Darinevirke hospital, but was found to be dead on arrival. His four young children were with him at the time, but all escaped injury.
