THREAT TO COAL
Competition From Oil “The battle with our greatest competitor, oil, has assumed alarming proportions for the coal industry. I congratulate the organisation on the promptitude and co-operation with which they are meeting the threat.” said the Minister of Mines (Mr Shand) in “New’ Zealand Coal,” the official journal of the Coal Mining District’s Welfare and Research Council. “Every plant that is saved for coal is a victory for the industry, a conservation of overseas funds and work for the miners,” said Mr Shand. “Coal merchants are working together in harmony, and the State is working with these organisations for their mutual benefit. A new Coal Advisory Service Association has been set up. sponsored and financed by the State and private enterprise combined, to give advice and service on coal-fired plant throughout the county.” “This organisation is effectively halting the drift from coal to oil by investigation and by advising on boiler plants in factories and institutions in New Zealand,” said Mr Shand.
